MP shows support for urban greening in Salford
Hazel Blears MP will be attending a community greening day in Salford on Saturday 5th June, helping the local people of Seedley and Langworth make tens of hanging baskets and fill troughs with flowers and plants. Ms Blears’ attendance at the community event is in advance of a national conference to be held in Salford promoting the value of community-based urban greening, where she will be the keynote speaker.
Hazel will be visiting Chimney Pot Park, on ??? Road, Salford at 1pm on 5th June, to get involved as local people prepare to bring splashes of greenery to where they live, filling hanging baskets that are being provided by ??? and troughs, which have been hand made by volunteers from the Prince’s Trust. This event has been organised by ??? and ??? as part of Salford’s contribution to the ‘In Bloom’ competition.
This event comes just before the ‘Community-Based Urban Greening’ conference, which will be taking place on 11th June at the Lowry, Salford Quays, Salford. This day-long conference will explore the ways that environmental projects within towns and cities can be developed with local people at their heart and has been co-ordinated by Red Rose Forest, Greater Manchester’s Community Forest and The National Urban Forestry Unit. It is attracting delegates from right across the country and it will be chaired by the environmentalist and broadcaster, Professor Chris Baines.

Red Rose Forest is an environmental regeneration initiative in Greater Manchester
and is one of 12 Community Forests being developed in England. We are a partnership
of The Countryside Agency, the Forestry Commission and six Greater Manchester
local authorities. The Red Rose Forest partnership is planting over 25 million
trees across 292 square miles of the area, as part of a 40-year programme that
will make Greater Manchester a greener and more satisfying place to live and
work. At the heart of our strategy is the involvement of local communities in
the environmental, social and economic regeneration of the area.
