RED ROSE FOREST PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES

Event: Wildflower Extravaganza Day at Dorset Road Community Centre, Hagfold, Atherton.

Date/Time: Saturday, March 12, 2pm.

Meet: Dorset Road Community Centre, Hagfold, Atherton.

Red Rose Forest, Greater Manchester’s Community Forest, is holding a fantastic Hagfold Wildflower Extravaganza Day, this Saturday. The day offers Hagfold residents the opportunity to take part in loads of free and fun activities, including wildflower seed sowing and planting and craft activities.

The wildflowers planted will include Ox Eye Daisies and Red Campion and seeds including Cornflower will be sown. They’ll flower this year at the Dorset Road Community Centre’s wildlife garden.

It is hoped the presence of these plants will improve the biodiversity of Hagfold by attracting insects, birds, butterflies and animal life. Red Rose Forest will also be providing a free training session to residents who would like to learn how to create beautiful wildflower areas.

The event is part of the wider ongoing Flowering Community Project in Atherton, which has already engaged the Atherton community with the skills and knowledge needed to grow wildflowers.

The project began last year and has already provided residents with the opportunity to visit the National Wildflower Centre and take part in seed collections and wildflower walks.

Ahterton Flowering Community Project partners include Red Rose Forest, Wigan MBC, Volunteers from Dorset Road Community Centre and Atherton Environmental Projects, plus local schools. Fliss Paris from Red Rose Forest, said: “This is going to be a great day for Hagfold and will give everyone the chance to learn new skills in a really fun way. And more importantly, it will help show people that individuals they can make a huge difference to their environment.”

Red Rose Forest was created in 1992 and is an environmental regeneration initiative in Greater Manchester. It is one of 12 Community Forests being developed in England. Over 40 years we will plant over 25 million trees, across 292 square miles of the area, as the framework for a programme of regeneration and renewal that will make Greater Manchester a greener more satisfying place to live. At the heart of our strategy is the involvement of people and businesses in the social, economic and environmental regeneration of the area through land development for the enjoyment of communities.
Red Rose Forest is a partnership of the Countryside Agency, the Forestry Commission and six Greater Manchester authorities.
