Alley-gaters from Langworthy are snapping at the chance to transform their back
yards into a sea of summer colour on Sunday.
Residents on Jones Street and Highfield Road will be brightening up the recently
gated alley they share, by planting a wonderful selection plants that will survive
all year round.
The event, which is being run jointly by Red Rose Forest, Greater Manchester’s
Community Forest, and Jonesfield Residents association, will be Red Rose Forest’s
first street greening event in Salford.
The planting day aims to brighten up the resident’s new gated alleyway which was finished late last year. With the onset of summer, there’s no better time to create a glorious garden space that everyone can share.
Green Streets, experts in street greening, will be on hand to help budding gardeners make up their own baskets after choosing from a variety of colourful but hardy plants and herbs. And in keeping with Green Streets’ eco-friendly policy, all the pots and planters being used are made from recycled plastic or reused containers.
Green Streets’ Salford Co-ordinator, Ben Greenaway, said: “I’m delighted that we’ve got off to such a great start in Salford. Alley-gating is a great resource because it not only improves security but it also allows people to create amazing communal gardens in their new secure spaces. The revamped alley is going to be an amazing asset for the residents. It will provide fantastic colours and a great habitat in which birds and insects can thrive.”

Notes to Editors:
Red Rose Forest is an environmental regeneration initiative in Greater Manchester
and one of 12 Community Forests being developed in England. We are a partnership
of the Countryside Agency, the Forestry Commission and six Greater Manchester
authorities. Over 40 years we will plant over 25 million trees, across 292 square
miles of the area, as the framework for a programme of regeneration and renewal
that will make Greater Manchester a greener and more satisfying place to live.
At the heart of our strategy is the involvement of local people and local businesses
in the social, economic and environmental of the area through land development
and enhancement for the enjoyment of communities and individuals.
Green Streets
The Green Streets initiative uses greening projects to improve the quality of
life for urban dwellers. This can be anything from tree planting to walled gardens.
It aims to engage people, especially the young, as much as possible, increasing
their sense of pride and community responsibility.
Green Streets produces sustainable tailor-made greening schemes to meet the very personal needs of every community.
Once viewed as the lipstick on an urban area, urban greenery now has a well-established and respected reputation for tackling environmental problems associated with city living like air and noise pollution. By having a positive effect upon the local environment in urban areas, greenery also helps to improve the health of those living in urban communities, reducing the cause of ill health.
The Salford Green Streets project is run by Red Rose Forest, Greater Manchester’s Community Forest, in partnership with The Booth Charities, Salford City Council, the Community Technical Aid Centre and United Utilities.
