Woodland Wildflowers Projects

Wildflowers are absolutely vital for a well-balanced and beautiful woodland. Red Rose Forest's Woodland Wildflower project is establishing a wide range of native woodland flowers in sites right across the Forest area.

The project is run nationally by all 12 of England's Community Forests and is funded by the Local Heritage Initiative.

The project involves local people: volunteers, community groups, guides and scouts, church groups and schools, to carefully collect a wide range of seeds (foxglove, red campion and bluebell for example) from woodlands abundant in wildflowers. The seeds are then grown into small plants by members of the local community in one of 7 purpose built 'flower nurseries' or dried and then sown in 'species poor' sites.

The Woodland Wildflower project also distributes seeds to various organisations through the Red Rose Forest Community Network, helping to improve even more woodland areas across Greater Manchester.

17 seed collections have taken place, generating over 2kg of wildflower seed.

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in the Woodland Wildflower project, whether it's coming along to a local seed collection or sowing event or offering to set up a nursery with a local community group or school. Contact Fliss Paris, the Community Liaison Officer for further information.
