Proud Of Manchester campaign branches out with Green Streets
PRESS RELEASE
14 April 2009
North Manchester residents have shown true pride in their community by planting ornamental trees, thanks to Manchester City Council and Red Rose Forest.
The 6 new trees have been planted on Stonehead Street in Harpurhey, providing a splash of colour to the area and attracting birds and other wildlife.
Residents had asked for new trees to spruce the area up, and the Amelanchiers trees - otherwise known as Juneberry or Snowy Mespilus - were provided with funding from the City Council's Proud Of Manchester campaign, which aims to celebrate life in the city's neighbourhoods and delivered by Red Rose Forest's Green Streets programme, which uses street greening projects to improve the quality of life for urban communities.
Councillor Paul Andrews, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: "Stonehead Street is a great example of how communities across Manchester take pride in their areas and what can be achieved when communities get together.
"Proud of Manchester is about building on this type of pride and showing how small changes can make a big difference to lifestyle and the wider community."
Kevin Wigley of Red Rose Forest, said: "The newly planted trees with really help to bring a splash of seasonal colour to the street especially for those residents who don't benefit from front gardens.
"Urban trees are also essential for meeting the challenge of climate change, providing local adaptation solutions such as providing shade and cooling during warm summer months, and helping to reduce the impact of flooding."

Green Streets is a nationally respected ground breaking initiative which uses street greening projects to improve the quality of life for urban communities. From planting street trees, to creating communal green alleyways and living green walls, Green Streets works at the heart of the community with residents, businesses and partner organisations to promote the value of greening as a means of tackling a range of social, health and economic issues. Each community is different so Green Streets produces a sustainable tailor-made greening scheme to meet their specific needs. Green Streets is a joint Red Rose Forest and Community Forests Northwest initiative in partnership with Manchester City Council, Trafford Council, Salford City Council, the Forestry Commission, the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and United Utilities.

The Proud Of campaign aims to recognise the positive aspects of living in Manchester's neighbourhoods, encourage sustainability and reward good citizenship. It is a year-long campaign themed around the four seasons with the launch organised to coincide with the start of spring.
Throughout the year, various activities have been planned around looking after yourself, caring for your neighbours and your neighbourhoods and helping to ensure your community provides a bright future for the next generation.
The campaign also encourages communities, residents' associations, schools, youth groups, older people's groups and other organisations to arrange their own events and activities.
