Winners of a Mother's Day art competition in Wigan present a unique and lasting gift to show their Mums how much they mean to them this Mother's Day.
Over 200 pupils from St Thomas' C.E. Primary School, in Ashton-in-Makerfield, entered an art competition to win a tree dedication for their Mums. The 8 lucky winners won a tree dedication in Viridor Wood, part of Red Rose Forest, the Community Forest for western Greater Manchester. The children presented the gifts to their Mums, which includes a Dedicate a Tree certificate and pack, just in time to take their Mums out for a relaxing Mother's Day walk around the Wood.
Lauren Winstanley, pupil at St Thomas' CE Primary school and one of the winners of the competition, said: ‘I liked doing the competition because I like drawing and writing things about my mum... I like going for a walk and looking at all the big trees'
Tony Hothersall, Director of Red Rose Forest said: "Dedicating a tree is a great way to celebrate Mother's Day. It's a really unique and special way to show how much your Mum means to you and is a gift with a real future. As well as being a special gift, the donation will count towards creating acres of community woodland that will enhance the local area and in turn provide the perfect place for recreation."
Karina Corkill, one of the lucky Mums, said: ‘The idea of a tree dedication reflects the importance of the environment, and the natural beauty of a mother'.
Nick Finch, teacher at St Thomas' CE Primary School, said: ‘We were keen to work with Red Rose Forest in this competition because we wanted to work with the local community and it fits with our eco schools award.'
‘The children wanted to win a fantastic prize for their mums and it reminded them that just around the corner we have a fantastic wood'
