PRESS RELEASE

MOSTONS KIDS LOVE TREES

On Tuesday 23 March 2010, local school children from St Mary's C of E Primary School will join together to celebrate the planting of 26 new trees outside their school and around the local area.

The trees, situated around Nuthurst Road and St Mary's Road, Moston, are a mixture of ornamental field maple and ornamental hornbeam, chosen because they are especially suited to a street environment. They have been planted as part of an on-going and ground breaking initiative to green urban spaces by Red Rose Forest, the Community Forest for western Greater Manchester.

The Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) has funded this project as part of the NWDA and Forestry Commission partnership programme, Newlands, together with Manchester City Council.

Hilary Wood from Red Rose Forest, said:

"The trees on Nuthurst Road and St Mary's Road will add a valuable and striking green focal point to the area, helping to promote biodiversity, improve air quality, combat the effects of climate change and create an attractive street scene for pupils and residents to enjoy."

Councillor Rita Tavernor, Manchester City Council, said:

"This project will bring a huge improvement to the local streetscape around St Mary's School, which will enhance the environment and promote the biodiversity of the area. The City Council take green issues seriously and are pleased to work with the Northwest Regional Development Agency, Forestry Commission and Red Rose Forest in continuing to develop interest in the environment."

The pupils from St Mary's CE Primary School, who sit on the school's Green Council said, "We think the trees will be really colourful."
