Children and families from Gorton held a special lantern parade last week at the recently improved Nutsford Vale site to celebrate improvements to the area.
The site was an explosion of colour and sound as over 30 children from Chapel Street and Gorton Mount Primary Schools paraded around the site with their families for an hour, after spending all week making their special willow and paper lanterns at school.
The procession was led by The 14-peice Northern Lights Band, from Huddersfield.
The funding for the project comes from Access to Nature, a scheme run by Natural England and funded by the Big Lottery Fund.
Local MP Sir Gerald Kaufman praised the work done on the site: "Nutsford Vale is a fantastic resource for the people of Gorton and Longsight. It's a great example of how multipurpose green space in the heart of the city will be enjoyed by people for years to come. I encourage the people of Gorton to start using it."
Gareth Lawler, Access to Nature Grants Adviser, said ‘Many of us can take for granted the benefits we enjoy from our natural environment but not everyone has the same opportunities. Natural England is using Lottery money to create opportunities for people from all backgrounds to have greater access as well as bring a lasting change to their awareness and understanding of nature - we are delighted that the community in Nutsford Vale is going to benefit from it.'
