Woodland development

Clayton Vale

Woodlands and trees can provide numerous benefits to the public and landowners alike.  From improvements in local air quality through to the provision of timber products, woodlands can have a positive affect on many parts of our lives.  Woodlands form part of the green infrastructure that makes our towns and cities beautiful and enjoyable places to live and work.

Woodland Development includes the creation of new woodlands and the management of existing woodlands.

Why do we need more woods and trees?

In the North West region there is around 5% woodland cover.  This is low compared with the national average (11%) which in turn is low compared to other European countries.
In Red Rose Forest we are encouraging woodland creation through our free advisory and support service and through working with partners to directly develop woodland and tree cover.  As an organisation, we have an annual target to plant 50ha of new woodland.

Why do woods need managing?

To maintain and enhance all the benefits that woodlands bring, most need some sort of management.  The lack of management of the nation’s native woodlands is now causing a decline in many woodland flora and fauna.
In Red Rose Forest we are encouraging woodland management through our free advisory and support service and through direct work with partners. As an organisation, we have an annual target to bring 100ha of woodland into management.
