Red Rose Forest is leading the field in the design and production of comprehensive tree audits.
Tree audits are a vital tool for local authorities providing a holistic and strategic approach to the management of trees and woodlands.
Manchester Tree Audit
In 2007 Manchester City Council commissioned Red Rose Forest to undertake the first Tree Audit for the City.
The work carried out had two strands 1) compiling and assessing existing tree and woodland datasets and 2) conducting a pilot tree canopy survey using aerial photography.
Findings from the tree canopy survey show that the total tree and woodland canopy cover for North and East Manchester comes to 15.39%. This is significantly higher than the national average for canopy cover in towns of 8.2% and the regional average for the North West of 7.9% (source: Trees In Towns 2). However, this is no cause for complacency; many cities elsewhere in the world have tree cover of more than 50%!
The Manchester Tree Audit proved to be a groundbreaking piece of work which generated considerable interest both locally and regionally. Red Rose Forest is now working with other local authorities to highlight the potential benefits of tree canopy surveys for the management of trees and woodlands across the region.
