Longton Road, Blackley

Background

The Green Streets team were approached by residents from Longton Road to help them resolve a parking issue that was compromising personal safety from both a crime and road accident perspective. Two areas of green space on Longton Road effectively landlocked resident’s houses from the road which meant that householder’s cars had to be parked on the main road a considerable distance from their houses. The parking of cars on the bend in the road reduced visibility and was a big concern for residents over the safety of children crossing the road. In addition at night time there were frequent incidents of cars being broken in to and women drivers expressed their vulnerability at having to walk from their cars across the greens in the darkness.

How did Green Streets help?

Neighbourhood Renewal Fund (NRF) funding enabled the Green Streets team to work closely with residents on devising the Green Car Park concept. This saw the installation of a load bearing matrix system that would sustain grass growth and the weight of a car without causing damage to the former. Residents are now able to drive their cars across the green spaces and park on their drives. This pilot has important consequences as it could help to arrest the trend in the loss of green space to parking by providing a viable green alternative. The project also proved to be beneficial in terms of establishing new working relationships with Northwards Housing Trust and GM Police.
