Moston Vale, Manchester

Background

Moston Vale is a 22 hectare former landfill site located in the heavily populated area of Moston, North Manchester. The area was transformed during the Industrial Revolution with rapid development leading to the building of dense areas of housing, much of which remains today. Uncontrolled tipping led to the flooding of Moston Brook, a tributary of the River Irk, and in 1969, Moston Vale became a landfill site.

What has Green Tips done?

Working with the Irk Valley Project, Green Tips started some small scale improvement works in 2002, providing some much needed security fencing to help prevent access by cars, motorbikes and the subsequent dumping and burning of the vehicles.  Working with the Moston Vale Residents Association and the wider community, more fencing was erected and wildflowers were planted to brighten the site.  Thanks, in part, to the work already undertaken by the Green Tips project, the site has now been taken over by Newlands, a multimillion pound urban regeneration project.  Work has now been completed at Moston Vale transforming the area from a place with community significance to an area of regional importance. All thanks to Green Tip’s initial management success.
