Ash Road, Tameside

Background

The Ash Road site runs east along the River Medlock towards Droylsden. It was used by Greater Manchester Council for landfill until 1979. It was then capped with a layer of soil and grass seed and remained as an unmanaged area of rough grassland with some tree planting until it was adopted by the Green Tips project in 2000.

What has Green Tips done?

In 2000 the Green Tips project started work on the Ash Road site. Soil conditions on the site have been improved with compost brought onto the area and planted with a mixture of native broadleaf trees. The area is now covered in meadow-like grassland with wildflowers, interspersed by semi mature broadleaf trees. Recent housing redevelopment and investment in the area has made the site particularly popular.  The landfilled area merges with other adjacent areas of recreational open space and is only a short hop to Clayton Vale and the Medlock Valley. Running east along the River Medlock towards Droylsden the Ash Road site now provides a fantastic green oasis which links Oldham and Manchester.
