Home Projects Green Tips Tweedle Hill, Manchester

Tweedle Hill, Manchester Background Tweedle Hill covers nine hectares near Blackley, North Manchester A former old clay pit, Tweedle Hill was used as a landfill site until the end of the 1960s. Subsequent landscaping produced an area of gently sloping, rough grassland and meadow. In 1997 the land was assessed for its suitability as a community woodland site. The site was tested for levels of contamination through an intensive study and research process, as part of the Forests Landfill to Community Woodland project and declared safe. Surrounded by housing and schools, the site is now frequently used by local residents as a recreational area and a pleasant cut through between residential areas. Most of the site is covered by rough meadow grass and wildflowers, with two areas of woodland and a border of mainly broadleaf trees to the southwest. The summer months find the area home to a variety of butterflies, moths, bees amongst others. What has Green Tips done? In March 1998 Red Rose Forest, with the help of local school children planted, approximately 1.3 hectares of trees on site and since 2001 Green Tips has carried our considerable improvement works, including securing entrances with attractive, durable gates and fencing, improving footpaths and working with local residents to create a wildflower meadow and orchard.
