Carr Clough Wood, Bury

Background

This 11 hectare vale on the Bury/Manchester border is surrounded on three sides by steep wooded slopes with open uninterrupted breathtaking views across the Irwell Valley. Carr Clough Wood is in a perfect location, near to Prestwich Clough and Phillips Park. The site is tied in with the Irwell Sculpture Trail and the National Cycle Network (National Cycle Route 6). The steep sides are covered with ancient protected woodland, which provide valuable wildlife habitats and ecosystems.

The area has an interesting industrial history and the remains of the nearby Clough Bleach Works can still be identified.  The track that crosses close to the south western boundary was originally a toll road used by local factory workers.  Prestwich Hospital was constructed in 1923 on the site to treat sufferers of smallpox and was called Drinkwater Park Isolation Hospital.

What has Green Tips done?

Red Rose Forest and The Mersey Forest have planted 3.7 hectares of woodland within the sites boundaries as part of an experiment to determine how well trees can grow on closed landfill sites, so far they appear to be doing very well.
