Tonge Valley, Bolton

Background

The Hypatia St landfill is located close to Bolton's town centre in an area of mixed residential and light industrial usage. Previously the site was used to produce clay for the brickworks that was located on the site. Once the brickworks were shut down the quarry was used for landfill which ceased in 1991.  The majority of the 5.8 ha that comprises the site is open grassland and areas of willow/birch scrub have established over the southern portion of the site.  An area of coniferous plantation has been established along the western edge of the site.  A small scrub woodland and heath has become established to the south of the site which is now an important wildlife area.

What has Green Tips done?

Improvement work has been undertaken on the site since 2004 working closely with local residents.  To date, the site’s boundary has been secured, this has greatly reduced the incidence of anti social activities and provided a sense of definition and accessibility for the site.  A network of footpaths has been created to encourage the site’s use.  A hectare of woodland and areas of wildflowers have been planted to increase the biodiversity and improve the appearance of the site. In 2005 more wildflowers were introduced into the site and additional access improvements were undertaken.  These include further barriers to prevent unauthorised vehicle access, additional footpaths to encourage additional visitors and further access improvements to the entrances to make access simpler.  The housing development to the southern portion of the site may significantly benefit the remainder of the site in the long term.
